***Spoilers! Spoilers! Spoilers!***

As I sat with my kids we totally binge watched the newest season of a much anticipated, space traveling, butt kicking, alien advocating, group of superheroes, their space wolf, space mice, and their many Allies! I’m sure you know which show I’m talking about, “Voltron!”

Apparently, some fans are upset. It was announced that this season Shiro was gay (Yes! Representation in the media)! His love interest Adam was left back on Earth when Shiro left to travel into space. Well... things didn’t work out so well. When our heroes made it back to Earth, there was a memorial plaque for Adam on a huge wall. The reason some of our fans are upset is our hero didn’t get his guy. Other’s are upset that our hero didn’t mourn his guy.

Yes. It’s sad. You kind of wish for that yay, that “Happily ever after”... (thanks Disney) But life is messy. Life is complicated. Life is full of ups and downs and triumphs and disappointments. If we constantly teach our kids that life will always finish on a high note are we not setting them up for a disappointment if they struggle and fail the first, second, or even third time?

I am absolutely ecstatic that we are seeing more LGBTQ representation in our media, especially in shows like Voltron and Steven Universe. Both of these shows are teaching our youth something very valuable. Life is messy and complicated! It is okay to question who you are. It’s absolutely okay to question your gender and your sexuality. It’s okay to not know who you want to be! Take your time to grow up.
Even adults, especially adults, don’t have it figured out!
